Kurian Road Trip 2010!
Jan 14 2010d

We are back from our East Coast road trip. It was less hectic than last year because we learned from our mistakes and planned it out better :) Since we didn’t go to New York (as my parents were out of town), we cut out that additional mileage and were able to enjoy a leisurely paced vacation, mostly in Philadelphia.

Monday, June 28th - We drove to Tampa to spend the night at my in-laws and save ourselves 2 ½ hours of driving the next morning.

Tuesday, June 29th – We were on the road by 4:30am.  Kids stayed in their PJs and eventually went back to sleep. Starting super-early was the right way to go; we managed to avoid all of Orlando’s I-4 traffic and didn’t stop at all until after we had crossed over to the east coast. At 8:30am we were enjoying a leisurely breakfast at a Cracker Barrel in Palm Coast (south of Jacksonville).

We made it to the Georgia border before 10am and passed South of the Border by 4pm.  Our “go-to” place for lunch-time rest-stops was ChickFilA. It was perfect because Jacob could run around in the indoor play area to burn off some energy (and hopefully poop). Afterwards, he’d eat and, once we were back on the road, take a nap.  Jacob is a good car-seat sleeper, so we did not stop while he was napping unless we absolutely had to.

We made so much progress that first day that we actually spent the night just over the North Carolina border, in Virginia!

Wednesday, June 30th – Happy Birthday to Jacob!  We crossed the Maryland border at 10:15am, Delaware at 1:30 (major traffic due to a dumb toll), and made it to our destination state of Pennsylvania at 2pm! Unfortunately there was a lot of traffic so we didn’t get to our hotel right away but, after driving around the city a bit, we arrived at the Hyatt at the Bellevue. It’s a hotel with a lot of history; some might call it old, but I guess they wanted to keep the historic vibe. I prefer hotels with more contemporary décor, but for FREE I could deal with it. Yup, it was paid with points, thanks to Sanjay’s frequent stays with Hyatt.

We “celebrated” Jacob’s birthday with a trip to a (TripAdvisor) recommended gelato shop. It was really good and Jacob happily pigged out on his vanilla gelato.

Thursday, July 1st - The Northeast was in the midst of a heat wave but, thankfully, the weather dropped into the high 70s/low 80s for the couple of days we were in Philly. Although our hotel’s location in Center City was pretty central to what we wanted to see, we still walked a LOT! My pedometer was clocking an average of 17,000 steps a day! We took advantage of the City Pass discount which allowed us free transportation on the Trolley. Our first stop was the Philadelphia Zoo. It was nice, and the gorgeous weather made it easy to spend time outdoors.  Next was the Please Touch Museum which is a hands-on childrens’ museum. It was a HUGE HIT with the kids! All these attractions closed at 4 or 5 o’clock, so by the time we left the museum, we called it a day and headed back to our hotel. For dinner we ate at this highly recommended (by TripAdvisor) Chinese restaurant called Sang Kee Peking Duck House. Sanjay is not big on Chinese food, but this place really earned its rave reviews. I can’t remember the last time I had good Chinese food and I’m glad we were not disappointed!

Friday, July 2nd – First stop of the day was The Franklin Institute, which I think is definitely targeted towards upper elementary and beyond.  At some point Jacob conked out, so Sanjay stayed in the lunch-room with him while I took Alisha to explore the rest of the Institute.  She really enjoyed herself. I think her favorite part was watching the shows in the planetarium; it was really impressive.  After we left the Institute, we checked out the Museum of Natural Sciences. I found it a little boring. There was a section for kids but it was small, and just eh. Oh well, it was included in our City Pass, so it’s not like we paid anything extra for admission.   For dinner Steve joined us in Philly and we ate at some Indian Fusion-type restaurant. It was okay, but I was sad there was no chicken tikka masala (my fave).

Saturday, July 3rd – We took a trip into the ‘burbs of Philly where we attended Sanjay’s annual family reunion. We were there a few hours, ate lunch, and were back on the road. We had 4th of July plans with our friends the Ipes so we headed to Jersey and stayed at a Residence Inn not too far from their place.

Sunday, the 4th of July – We went to church in the morning and headed to Joel & Namita’s for a 4th of July BBQ. The kids had a good time and we’d brought some sparklers which they enjoyed waving around.  By the end of the day we were all happy, full and exhausted J

Monday, July 5th – We checked out of our hotel, ate brunch at this really good diner called the Americana and headed back towards Philly. We had one place left to visit on our City Pass and that was the Camden/Adventure Aquarium. It was O-Kay, I guess. Not worth a repeat trip, in my opinion.

We spent our last night at the Embassy Suites in downtown Philly. Very spacious; it would have been nice to stay there instead of the Hyatt, but it also would have cost us money!

Tuesday, July 6th – We started our drive bright and early. We had to make it to Palm Coast, Florida (south of Jacksonville) in order for Sanjay to present a seminar the next day at the Hammock Beach Resort.  The resort was lovely with beautiful pools, lush landscaping and a beach.  At last, the kids got their pool fix! I wish we could have stayed for longer than one night, but not if it meant coughing up the moolah ourselves!

Wednesday, July 7th – We drove and we drove and we drove, and we finally made it back to our home sweet home. Even though we were only gone for 10 days, it was a jam-packed 10 days. The kids had a blast, and we enjoyed ourselves too. Two thumbs up for Road Trip 2010!

Prepping for our 2nd annual road trip
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
So, we’re getting ready for what is turning into our annual Road Trip up north!  My parents are out of town during the 4th of July weekend, so we’re only driving as far north as New Jersey this year. We just saw my parents a few weeks ago (the funeral, remember) and they were here last month so it’s not a huge deal. Anyway, we are planning our road trip a little differently than we did last year, in the hopes that it will work out better. We’re driving to my in-law’s this evening and spending tonight in Tampa. Tomorrow we will wake up before dawn, get on the road, and drive as far as we can. Then, on June 30th (aka Jacob’s 2nd birthday) we should be in Philly! So, unlike last year, we won’t be spending Jacob’s entire birthday on the road :)

This year Philly is the highlight of our trip.. We booked a hotel in Center City and are paying for it with promotional rewards through Hyatt. We have a general idea of things we want to do, but we also realize that we don’t have time to do EVERYTHING in 3 days. And, with Jacob, ya gotta be flexible, which means we probably aren’t going to do the historical stuff. Fortunately, from what I’ve read, there’s plenty for kids to do. And we all know that wearing out Jacob is the name of the game!

BTW I’m continuing my new process of traveling light. I am going to pack half of what I did last year. I figure we can do laundry at least once and that will take us through the rest of our visit.

AMK & JTK's 2-for-1 birthday party :)
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok

Yesterday was Alisha and Jacob’s birthday party celebration, and what a day it was! Alisha got into her bathing suit right after breakfast and was outside for pretty much the entire day. We surprised her by renting a Disney Princess bounce house. Yeah, I know this sets a precedent for next year, but we thought it’d be fun. So between the water play and the bouncing and the partying, is it any wonder that Alisha wasn’t feeling well by the end?  The poor girl actually had a 101-ish fever! I guess that’s what happens when you have too much fun. Her grogginess didn’t last very long; once she un-wrapped her new Nintendo DSi, she felt much better!   Nope, it wasn’t from us, it was from was her #1 uncle, currently my brother. The #1 ranking changes from day to day, but there’s no doubt that yesterday my brother was tops on her list.

As usual, we lumped in Jacob’s birthday with his big sister’s. Fortunately, he’s too young to notice the difference. When he gets a little older (like Kindergarten-ish), then he can have his own birthday party. Maybe. Until then, why exceed expectations? I still can’t believe he’s almost 2 years old. I wonder how much longer the Terrible Twos will last…until he’s 3 ½? I keep saying I can’t wait until Jacob’s 4 years old, because 4 was my favorite age with Alisha, but we all know how fast time flies, so I know 4 will be here soon enough.  And the older the kids get, the older I get, so maybe I SHOULDN’T wish for time to go by quite that fast!

Hand, foot & mouth
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
Jacob’s got the latest day-care virus, hand-foot and mouth (HFM) disease! I didn’t realize that’s what it was until I took him to the doctor. I mean last week he had MAJOR diaper rash, but then his feet started developing a rash, and soon afterwards I noticed his hands were getting blotchy. I wondered if it could be HFM but couldn’t see anything in his mouth (since he wouldn’t open it for me) so I went to the doctor where I got the official diagnosis. Anyway, she said since Jacob doesn’t have a fever he can still go to school. HFM is most contagious during its incubation period which is 2 weeks before the rash develops. Once you see the rash, there’s really nothing you can do.

I've never had experience with this virus before, since Alisha made it through her 3 years in day-care without ever getting it. Gotta be grateful for that :)

Anyway, I’m wondering if all this is the reason that Jacob has been such a crab. I mean, if he’s had this virus for a couple of weeks then that would’ve overlapped our trip to New York. Could this be the reason why he was driving me nuts? I’d like to think so because at least it would help me rationalize his behavior, as opposed to him being a Terrible Two for no reason!

AMK, the 8 year old!
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
Another year older means another year closer to becoming a teenager! It’s hard to believe that I’ve been a mom for 8 years. In some ways, I feel like I’ve always been a mom. It’s just such a big part of who I am. Anyway, Alisha’s official birthday party will be this weekend, but I still bought a tiny Carvel ice cream cake to celebrate her special day. I know, I know, kids these days are soooo lucky! What can I say, I just couldn’t let Alisha’s birthday go by without acknowledging it in a delicious way! And who doesn't like Carvel ice cream cake...except for one person (hint, hint, I'm married to him)!

Jacob the Terrible
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
I spent 4 nights in New York, but it felt more like 4 weeks! Jacob was a ROYAL pain, from start to finish. I don’t know what was going on with him, but he was just moody and cranky and irritated and wouldn’t go to anyone except for me. Needless to say, it was a delightful visit. :|

Looking back, I don’t think my presence even made a difference. I mean, during the viewing I took Jacob to the basement because he was being loud, and during the funeral/burial I stood around and carried his sleeping self while sweating bullets. I seriously think I lost a few pounds from Jacob-related stress. As far as his behavior on the plane, Jacob did sleep, but not as much as I would have liked. I suppose something is better than nothing. After this trip, I don’t know when I want to subject myself to another flight to NY without Sanjay. Suffice it to say, I’m not in any rush.

Going to New York with JTO & JTK
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
So, I’m going to New York tomorrow. My uncle/dad’s brother died (suddenly) this week and my brother and I are flying up for the wake and funeral. I was debating whether or not to take Jacob, but figured why not since this is the last time he’ll get to fly for free. Plus, I know how much his grandparents will enjoy having him around, especially at this time.

Anyway, I’m packing light which means I’ll be taking my wheeled carry-on suitcase, Jacob’s car seat (which I'll attach to the carry-on) and my camera/diaper-bag. Not bad for 4 nights, and much better than the 2 checked suitcases (23”ish & 25”) I used to pack when I’d fly up to New York with Alisha back in the day. I gotta say, traveling light is quite liberating.

The only thing I’m anxious about is traveling with Jacob. He could make this a very pleasant trip or a very LONG trip. Our flight to NY leaves at 7:40pm so I’m hoping that taking the last flight of the day will pay off and Jacob will go to sleep. If not, there’s always Benadryl (which I’m taking with me, just in case). There’s nothing like having a cranky, noisy toddler on a plane.

Wish me luck!

Josie's wedding weekend in Chattanooga, TN
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
So, another busy weekend, but this time we spent it in Tennessee to attend my cousin (fake cousin, as we like to call each other) Josie’s wedding. She lives in Ft. Lauderdale but her hubby’s family lives close to the GA/TN border. Chattanooga is the closest big city so that’s where the wedding was held.

We got a great deal flying from Ft. Lauderdale to Atlanta, so that’s what we did. We drove 2 hours to FLL, flew 2 hours to ATL and drove 2 hours to Chattanooooooooga. By the time we got our rental and started our drive to TN, we were just in time for Friday rush-hour in Atlanta. HOLY cow, it was really, really bad.

Eventually we made it to our hotel, the Chattanoogan. Unfortunately, we had no time to put our feet up because we were already late for the rehearsal dinner. My aunt and uncle (Big and Appachen) flew in from Bombay for the wedding and were constantly asking my cousin to check on our arrival status. Out of all my aunts and uncles, I know Big (short for Big Mom aka mom’s older sis) and Appachen the best. They both visited (and lived with) us for a few months back in 1986/1987? It was a long time ago so I don’t remember exactly when, however, I do remember my uncle walking me to school every day. Then, in 1991, Big came back for another extended visit. Needless to say, I was really happy to see them after 4 years (which was our last trip to India). Anyway, dinner was North Indian food and, I don’t know if it was because I hadn’t eaten chicken tikka masala in a while or what but, it was GOOD! I pigged out until there was no more naan.

The wedding was on Saturday afternoon. It was so nice, being able to lounge around all morning, no rush and nothing to do. We got to the church with plenty of time to spare. I took plenty of pictures. Josie looked amazing; she and her hubby Jason are such a good-looking couple!

Jacob was being Jacob, so Sanjay walked around with him in the back of the (1/4 full) church. I took plenty of pictures while Alisha made friends. Being a Pentecostal wedding, it was a short ceremony. Afterwards, we returned to our hotel for the reception. The ballroom was decorated beautifully. No alcohol but there was a selection of “Mock-tails” for your drinking pleasure. There was a lot of dancing. Alisha did not want to leave her new BFF, who we found out, at the very end, was CSI and from NJ. Small world, right?

Our return trip was uneventful. Jacob behaved as well as we could expect. Before our trip, I'd purchased the Traveling Toddler Car Seat Travel Accessory, a strap that attaches to the LATCH system of the carseat and allows you to connect your carseat to your wheeled carry-on. It was a huge help and allowed us to get around the airport without a stroller. Highly recommended and I will definitely be using it again.

Steve's engagement weekend
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok
The weekend is over and we are back at home. The drive up to Tampa was, thankfully, uneventful. Jacob slept for 2 solid hours, so the no-nap thing paid off. Alisha enjoyed having the portable DVD player all to herself. And I stocked up on chicken nuggets before we hit I-75 so there was no need to make any pit-stops.

Anyway, it was hard getting back into the swing of things today. The engagement was good, but Jacob’s behavior was exceptionally BAD. It reminded me of his tantrum-y Disney cruise behavior but worse (in a way) because he only wanted his daddy! Meanwhile, Sanjay was busy running around, taking care of business. I had my camera but didn’t take many pics because I was not in a proper frame of mind. It’s hard to take pics when you have to deal with a crabby toddler. Anyway, Jim & Tami drove up for the engagement, and Veg was there too. Of course they were all seated at our table (guess who arranged that?). My parents wanted to be there but this weekend was a really busy one for them in New York, with a wedding on Saturday and Sandy’s dad’s memorial service on Sunday.

Anyway, let’s hope I can take some decent shots at Steve & Sherry’s wedding. I can’t even imagine how crazy the wedding weekend will be. Fortunately we don’t have to worry about that until October. But we all know how quickly the time will fly!

My first road trip with the kids (and no hubby)!
Jan 14 2010d
[info]leenaok

So, I’ve been a “single” mom all week. Sanjay’s been in Tampa (for work) since Sunday so it’s just been me, myself and I.  And Alisha and Jacob, but you know what I mean. Anyway, we (as in, the 3 of us) are going to Tampa tomorrow for Steve’s engagement this weekend.  Yes, I am doing a 2 1/2 hour drive with my kids. I really hope they behave. My Altima is no Ford Expedition EL. I don’t have a built-in DVD player so someone will have to hold the portable one in their lap and it’s not going to be Jacob.  On a related note, I am not going to let Jacob take his afternoon nap, which will (hopefully) mean he’ll conk out in the car.  Peace and quiet, that is all I ask!

Anyway, Alisha’s happy because she gets to miss a day of school on Friday. My in-laws have invited Steve’s future in-laws for dinner tomorrow (Thursday) night, which means I will finally get to meet my future sister-in-law, Sherry, in person.   I’m going to pick up Alisha a little early from school and we will leave from there and head directly to Tampa. Because of all the family coming into town, Sanjay volunteered us stay at a hotel, which actually works out pretty well. No sharing bathrooms for us!

Wish me luck :)
